Example: Add a roll top strap to any pack; Below: It's that easy! Attachment for the upper buckle depends on the pack brand. McHale Packs have a strip of velcro on the other side of the drawstring - the upper end of the roll top buckle can be attached to a strip of velcro to attach there.

Below: You can do lots of cool things to buckles with drills, soldering irons, and saws. Saws are less poluting but this can be done in the field with hot wire and a stove. Cut a slot in the holder bar at the other end to replace a buckle on a permanent sewn loop - you will need needle-nose pliers to work it back onto the web loop. You can cut the old buckle in half with wire cutters to remove it from the pack.

2) Add a safety feature to non-locking sliders on zippers: If you have 2 sliders on a zipper on say a fanny pack or side pocket and you want more security while skiing add some cord and a cord lock. The zip will open larger than the length of the loop you add - see pic 3 - Jaws!

or:

Buckle trick for hip belts to make them fit after losing body weight. Remove the buckle and hardware and reattach the buckle first and then the slider. You may need an an extra slider to make this work. The webbing can be passed through the buckle in 2 directions depending on which way you want the tail to face:
